The tractor itself had to be drawn by horses as there were no driveshaft. Within the structure was a massive flywheel and crankshaft that transferred power to the farm equipment being pulled via a large belt. The engine was built around a locomotive looking frame. The next significant advancement took place around 1860 when William Tuxford invented a fully portable steam engine. ![]() The first cases of powered farm equipment started to appear as early as 1812 when Richard Trevithick designed a somewhat portable steam engine, which was used to drive corn threshing machines.
